A Look at North Georgia's Sever Weather History

North Georgia, and particularly the Metro Atlanta area have a unique climatology. Weather events range from tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, tropical storms, and even hurricanes. That is one of the many reasons SERVPRO of Marietta West has been a community leader in storm recovery since the early 2000’s, providing our community with the much needed manpower and experience to make it “Like it never even happened”. Join us for a look at some of the reasons why North Georgia frequently experiences storm events and how you can prepare your home and loved ones for weather events.
Due to its topography and geological location, the northern part of the state is often referred to as tornado alley. The “alley” ranges from Rome, GA to Gainesville, GA then to Newnan, GA and back to Rome, GA. North Georgia’s severe weather is oftentimes fed by moisture generated in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Most of North Georgia’s severe weather occurs at the end of the winter season and continues into early spring. Another contributing factor is the elevation of the area, which in most parts is over 1,000 ft but can very wildly up to 4,784 ft (Brasstown Bald Mountain, the highest point in all of Georgia). These elevation changes can create great variances in barometric pressure which can precipitate severe weather. This can also create issues forecasting the weather, compounding the difficulty level of early storm warning systems.
It is important to prepare before a disaster occurs. Consider the following steps to help you better prepare for an emergency:
- Sign up for local alerts and warnings, download apps, and/or check access for wireless emergency alerts.
- Develop and test emergency communication plans.
- Assemble and maintain emergency supplies.
- Learn about local hazards and conduct a drill to practice emergency response actions.
- Participate in a preparedness discussion, training, or class.
- Collect and safeguard critical documents.
- Plan with neighbors to help each other and share resources.
