The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) was established in 1974 to gather information about US fire incidents. This government agency created a standardized and uniform way of reporting on not just fire incidents, but also other services as they relate to fire incidents like Emergency Medical Services (EMS), severe weather events, and natural disasters.Through gathering, reporting, and making fire data publicly available, fire departments and city officials are able to use statistical analysis to improve their departments and strengthen possible weaknesses. Much of Georgia’s fire safety laws and regulations can be attributed in part to NFIRS’s tireless gathering and reporting Georgia’s fire statistics.

The following are some of the most recent data points collected by NFIRS on Georgia fire incidents:

• Fire deaths and injuries totaled 2.4 deaths and 8.9 injuries per 1,000 fire incidents. This includes both residential structural fires and commercial fire losses, and is inline with the national averages which are 2.3 deaths and 9.3 injuries per 1,000 fire incidents.
• Residential fires have a higher mortality and injury rate than commercial fire incidents, averaging 7.6 deaths and 26.8 injuries per 1,000 fires in residential settings. These rates are slightly higher than the national averages, which are 6.1 deaths and 24.5 injuries per 1,000 residential fires.
• Structures and Residential fires account for 85.6% of all fire deaths and 81.4% of all fire injuries. These rates are slightly above the national averages which are 77.6% of all fire deaths and 76.1% of all fire injuries.
• In 2018, the U.S. news media reported on 83 home fires that resulted in deaths.
• Between 1990 and 2018 the U.S Fire Administration received reports that 62 on-duty firefighters perished in the line of duty due to fire related incidents.
