There are several things to take into consideration after you or a loved one has experienced a home fire. The American Red Cross has several guidelines that will help you and your family cope with a home fire. They advise you to, “Pay attention to how you and your loved one are experiencing and handling stress.” The American Red Cross also advises people that have a pet should watch them closely and keep them under your strict supervision.
Handling and processing the stress of a home fire can be very taxing, that's why SERVPRO of Marietta West is here to help. We can help you take control of the situation by providing you with an executable action plan to restore your property to preloss condition, relieving your stress and giving you peace of mind.
4 Steps to Take Immediately After a Home Fire
- Call 9-1-1 immediately. Provide first aid where needed If you are trained and capable to to do so. Treat burns with cool water and cover them with sterile and clean gauze or cloth to reduce the chance of further infection or injury.
- Let friends and family members know that you are safe.
- People and/or animals that are seriously injured or burned should be treated or transported to medical professionals (or trained veterinarian) for immediate help.
- Stay out of fire-damaged homes until local fire authorities have deemed the structure safe to re-enter.
*People like infants, elderly people, those without transportation, people with disabilities, and large families may need additional help in emergency situations
Before a Fire Happens, You Should Develop an Escape Plan
- The escape plan should include two ways to get out of each room in case the primary way is blocked by smoke or fire.
- Window security bars should be in good working order and able to be readily opened. Window screens should be easily removable and windows in general should not have impediments that prevent you from opening them easily.
- The second way out of a room might be a window that leads to the roof or a collapsible ladder that allows you to escape from an upper level window.
- With your eyes closed or in the dark you can practice feeling your way out of the house to simulate low visibility due to smoke.
- Teach children not to be scared of firefighters that my be searching the home and not to hide from them in the event of a fire.
