Fire Extinguisher Cleanup in Marietta, GA
10/7/2020 (Permalink)
So you’ve just used your fire extinguisher to extinguish a small fire in your kitchen that started when you lost track of time cooking dinner. While you are grateful that the fire is out, now you wonder what you should do to clean up the gigantic mess left behind? The amount of permanent damage from the fire is minimal, but there are signs of fire damage in the form of scorch marks above the oven. Also, there is fire suppressant powder everywhere. It’s in and around the oven where the fire extinguisher put out the oven fire, and there is a thin layer of dust settling on the surfaces in the room. There is an overwhelming and pervasive smoke smell throughout your entire home and the air is thick with fire suppressant powder. It’s time to call the industry leaders...SERVPRO of Marietta West. We are the fire restoration professionals that can make any size fire damage “Like it never even happened.”
SERVPRO’s Standard Protocol for Fire Extinguisher Cleanup
Technicians will don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Cleaning up fire retardant discharged from a fire extinguisher requires PPE like goggles, rubber gloves, and a respirator or dust mask to minimize exposure to hazards during the cleaning process. They will clean the affected area using high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtered vacuums and SERVPRO’s proprietary cleaning products like SERVPRO Orange Plus, Wall and All Surface Cleaner, Bright-N-Neutral Cleaner and disinfectants like Sporiciden or SERVPROxide to sanitize.
How to Cleanup After a Fire Extinguisher is Discharged…

Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher (most common)
Non-Porous Surfaces
- First vacuum up all the dry powder using a HEPA filtered vacuum.
- Then use a professional cleaning solution, like one found in SERVPRO’s line of proprietary cleaning products, to wet clean the affected surface (use cleaning products as directed by manufacturer or according to product label).
- After wet cleaning use clean clear water on a damp clean towel or cleaning cloth to gently remove any residual cleaning product residue.
- Finally, Sporiciden or SERVPROxide can be used to sanitize the affected area (if the area is utilized for food prep, an appropriate food-grade sanitizer should be used to sanitize the food prep area).
Porous Surfaces
- Vacuum thoroughly to remove as much of the dry powder material as possible using HEPA filtered vacuum.
- You may need to beat the surface with a small handle to get the dust to the top of the surface.
- DO NOT work the vacuum back and forth across the area. This will push the dust further into the surface making the area harder to clean.
Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher (less common)
