In Marietta and Kennesaw, we are no strangers to severe weather. Weather events like severe thunderstorms, flash floods, and even tornadoes typically see an uptick during warmer months. Often the spring and summer months are filled with weather ranging from light rain to severe storms, and the regularity with which these occur can lead to complacency.
However, it is important to remember that preparedness is a must—any severe storm has the potential to cause damage, and if you are prepared, you will be far more equipped to handle anything that happens. Storms can develop at a moment's notice so it is very important to pay attention to local weather reports and stay aware of local weather conditions.
One of the best ways you can help your household be more prepared is through building a severe weather emergency kit. Having everything you and your family might need in one convenient place is a great way to ensure that you will be ready for whatever severe weather comes your way.
While there are many things you may want to include depending on your family’s needs, there are a few must-have items that any household can benefit from.
The Must-Have Items to Keep in Your Storm Emergency Kit
A NOAA Weather Radio
When the weather turns severe, the power will often go out and cell phones will suffer from poor reception, which can be deadly when you are relying on these things for updates about rapidly changing weather conditions. Getting an NOAA weather radio is a great way to ensure that you can get vital updates no matter what. If you choose a battery-powered model, be sure you pack extra batteries in your kit as well.
Flashlights and Batteries
If the power goes out it may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can actually be quite dangerous if you have no light source at all. Pack one flashlight per person in your emergency kit, along with lanterns for communal spaces, and be sure you pack plenty of batteries so you can replenish your light supply.
Food and Sealed Water Bottles
If the power is out for an extended period of time, it can be impossible to cook for homes that do not have a gas stove. Be sure your emergency kit contains some protein-rich food such as meal replacement bars or canned soups, and pack one gallon of water per person per day. It is recommended that you have enough food and water for three days at minimum.
