It’s fall again, and it’s not hard to tell it—temperatures are cooling off, leaves are changing to that gorgeous mix of autumnal colors and the Bulldogs are back on TV every Saturday. Decorations are going up for fall parties and festivals, and everything smells like pumpkin spice. As you decorate and celebrate the season, it’s important to keep fire safety in mind, so let’s review a few things quickly.
Campfire Safety
- Fall camping hits differently—crisp mornings and cool nights are perfect for a campfire. But before you start roasting s’mores, make sure you’re building and extinguishing your fire properly.
- Keep your open flame at least 25 feet from any structures, on sandy or dirty ground, with a pit of stones around it. Never use kerosene or lighter fluid to start or accelerate your fire—stick to matches or lighters only.
- An unwatched fire is a dangerous fire. Never leave your campfire burning by itself, and always make sure every ember is completely extinguished by water before you head out of camp.
Leaf Burning
- If your yard is covered in dry, brown leaves, you have a few options if you want to be rid of them. You can have them hauled away, mulch and repurpose them, or burn them. If you choose to burn your trimmings and leaves, your first step is to acquire a permit from Georgia Forestry, and then make your local fire station aware that you’ll be using an open fire.
- Burning anything besides organic yard waste is both banned and dangerous.
- A burn barrel is your safest option, if you have one—secondarily, a dirt space with a well-maintained pile will do. Keep your fire 50 feet from the home or any outbuildings, and clear of any low-hanging tree branches that could ignite.
Halloween
- If you’re getting ready for a spooky Halloween, or simply putting out more subtle fall décor, be aware of the hazards of hanging or flammable decorations, especially around candles, which cause an alarming number of fires each year. Make sure any string lights are unplugged when not in use as well.
