We would all likely agree that we would rather not experience a fire in our homes, but are you sure that you are doing everything you can to protect your household from fire dangers? Household fires are extremely common, and while educating your family about fire prevention and installing adequate smoke detectors are the first steps to take toward fire safety, it is also important to have a plan in case you must evacuate.
House fires can rapidly grow massive in size, causing smoke to fill the air and making escape difficult or impossible. For this reason, having an escape plan fully memorized in advance can make a major difference—that way, you and your family will immediately know what to do if a fire begins so you can all get to safety quickly.
How to Create a Fire Escape Plan for Your Family
**Consider the Exit Pathways for Each Room**
To make sure you can safely exit your home no matter where the fire initially breaks out, it is important that each room has at least two exits to escape from. For upstairs rooms, this may make it necessary to purchase an emergency ladder or other sort of device so one could escape from the door or the window if it became necessary to do so.
**Rehearse as a Family Repeatedly**
In a frightening situation such as a house fire, making sure that you have equipped yourself with the knowledge you need to escape is a must, as fear can make logical thinking harder. Make sure that your family rehearses the fire escape plan regularly and can execute it in under two minutes every time.
**Have a Plan for Young Children & Pets**
If you have anyone in the household that may need assistance escaping from a house fire, such as young children, elderly relatives or pets, make sure there is a plan in place for how to help them. Designate someone in the household to help them to safety so no one is left behind during a fire in the confusion.
