Be Ready for Surprise Winter Storms | SERVPRO of Marietta West

Metro Atlanta isn’t exactly Alaska. We don’t see winter coming in the same way, and we don’t anticipate long periods of an iced-over Marietta. But as we’ve seen in recent years, it only takes one good freeze to cause a heck of a lot of trouble.
So as we look to the very near future, toward the prospect of another winter, let’s look at the things you can do to best be ready in the event of a winter storm that could otherwise disrupt or endanger your life.
Protect Your Family
If an extreme weather event hits our area, you’re going to be glad you have an emergency action plan on which your family can rely. This will give you a detailed game plan for communicating, evacuating and meeting up again. Preparing your vehicle for safe, reliable operation during winter is part of this preparation as well. Make sure your engine, battery, fluids and tires are all ready for the coming months, so you can drive safely in freezing rain or ice if it comes to it. Stock and check your emergency kits, both in the car and in the house, to make sure you’ll have the water, food, medication and other supplies you might need in a difficult moment.
Protect Your Home
Frozen pipes can be a real drip, or rather a flood, in your home. Nose-diving temperatures can cause water to freeze and expand in your plumbing, so when it gets bitter cold, let those faucets drip to relieve some pressure and keep things from freezing up. Check your HVAC system now, too, before it hits the worst fights of the winter season. Regular maintenance can keep it running healthily and keep you cozy. Consider the state of your attic’s insulation and window seals as well, to increase energy efficiency and keep cold air out of the house. If you use a wood furnace or fireplace, clean it well and keep extra wood nearby in case of a shut-in scenario.
Protect Your Pets
Your furry friends may have some extra fuzz for the winter, but they’re not made for bitter cold. Let them come in with you and enjoy some warm air and comfort. If you do have livestock or horses, keep them stocked up on water (replace it often in freezing temperatures) and ensure safe shelter from the elements. Extreme weather is possible in our area, so always let weather apps and local news keep you updated when nasty weather is on the horizon.
